Jodocus Hondius is Dutch mapmaker who created this world map in 1596. In the middle of the bottom of the map is armoured Protestant knight who bravely fought against vanity, sin, carnal weakness, devil and death, all of which are symbolically linked to Catholicism and the Spanish foe. From the 1560 to 1648 the Protestant Dutch had been fighting the Catholic Spanish for their independence.
The Berber mapmaker al-Idrisi was one of the leading geographers of medieval Europe. The map is probably the most accurate depiction of Europe, North Africa and western Asia to be produced in medieval times.
